Luis Barragán
Luis Barragán developed an architecture built around movement, enclosure, landscape, light and intense fields of color. Rather than separating buildings from their surroundings, his work turns gardens, walls, courtyards and water into parts of a single spatial experience.

Barragán did not import European modernism unchanged
His travels introduced him to Le Corbusier, the European avant-garde, Mediterranean gardens, the Alhambra, and the work of French landscape designer Ferdinand Bac. He combined these references with memories of Mexican haciendas, village streets, patios, ranches, fountains, and monastic courtyards.
The result was neither a rejection of modernism nor a regional decoration applied to it. Barragán demonstrated that modern architecture could remain geometrically simple while being rooted in a particular climate, landscape, culture, and way of life.
He rejected the idea that a modern house should be transparent
Barragán criticized the enormous sheets of glass used in international modernism. He believed that they exposed domestic life, eliminated intimacy, produced glare, and removed the shadows needed to make a room calm and inhabitable.
His high walls and carefully positioned openings were not merely stylistic features. They controlled heat and daylight, protected private life, framed selected views, and separated the interior from the visual noise of the city. The wall became an environmental and psychological instrument rather than a simple boundary.
Colour was a building material, not a surface decoration
Barragán used colour to define depth, separate volumes, redirect attention, and change the apparent proportions of a space. At Casa Gilardi, he continued adjusting the hues during construction according to natural light, wall texture, and the scale of each surface.
This means that his colours cannot be reduced to a reusable palette of pink, yellow, and blue. Their effect depends on where a wall stands, how rough it is, when sunlight reaches it, and what colours, materials, water, or vegetation appear beside it. Colour completes the architectural composition rather than being added after it.
His colour language was shaped through artistic exchange
Barragán publicly acknowledged the teachings of Mexican painter Jesús "Chucho" Reyes, who helped him develop what he called the art of seeing. Reyes also advised him on religious art during the long development of the Capuchin Convent Chapel.
Barragán's architecture is often presented as the product of a solitary master, but its visual language developed through conversations with artists, photographers, architects, clients, and craftspeople. Recognizing these relationships explains why his buildings move so easily between architecture, painting, sculpture, landscape, and stage design.
Barragán designed buildings as sequences of concealment and revelation
The rooms of Casa Barragán are arranged as a succession of carefully staged scenes. Entrances, corridors, stairs, walls, and partial views delay the full understanding of the house. A dark or compressed passage may suddenly open onto a double-height room, a garden, a brightly coloured wall, or a pool.
Architecture therefore unfolds in time rather than being understood from a single photograph or floor plan. Movement, anticipation, memory, and surprise become part of the design, turning an ordinary walk through a house into a controlled emotional experience.
He treated the garden as part of the architecture
Barragán did not see landscape as empty space surrounding a completed building. Walls extended into gardens, plants entered rooms visually, paths guided movement, and terraces transformed natural terrain into a sequence of enclosed places.
At Jardines del Pedregal, he worked with the existing volcanic landscape instead of erasing it. Lava formations, crevices, native vegetation, architecture, and gardens formed a new model of suburban life that was modern but visibly tied to the Valley of Mexico.
Water was used to shape sound, light, and movement
Pools and fountains in Barragán's work were not simply decorative features. Water reflected coloured walls, projected moving light onto surfaces, cooled open spaces, produced sound, and marked transitions between different parts of a project.
At Cuadra San Cristóbal, a monumental fountain feeds a shallow pool designed for horses. At Casa Gilardi, the indoor pool shares a room with the dining area and becomes the visual centre of the house. Water changes how the architecture is heard and perceived as much as how it looks.
Casa Barragán hides an experimental interior behind an ordinary façade
Built in 1948, Barragán's own house and studio presents an intentionally unassuming face to the street. Inside, its modern geometric plan is transformed by changes in level, carefully framed views, religious objects, artworks, furniture, colour, shadow, and a large opening toward the garden.
Barragán continued modifying the house as he lived there, making it both a home and a permanent architectural experiment. Its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 recognized the building as an exceptional synthesis of modern, traditional, vernacular, philosophical, and artistic ideas.
Barragán financed much of his creative freedom through property development
During the early 1940s, Barragán began working as a real-estate investor and developer. The financial independence he gained allowed him to experiment with gardens, houses, and residential developments without depending entirely on conventional architectural commissions.
This helps explain why many of his mature projects feel unusually personal. He could purchase land, shape the larger development, control the landscape, build speculative houses, and sometimes act as his own client. Architecture, landscape design, urban development, and business were interconnected parts of his practice.
Cuadra San Cristóbal was designed around the movements of horses as well as people
Barragán developed the equestrian estate with architect Andrés Casillas. Its house, stables, paddocks, pasture, monumental fountain, and walled courtyard were planned as one landscape. Openings in the main wall were proportioned to allow horses and mounted riders to pass through them.
The project uses the scale and rhythm of horses to determine architecture. Its long walls, water basin, rough paving, pasture, and saturated colour translate memories of ranch life into a modern spatial composition rather than treating the horse as a picturesque accessory.
The Capuchin Convent Chapel was refined for more than six years
Barragán offered both his professional services and financial support to the religious community in Tlalpan. He repeatedly adjusted the plan, circulation, altar, walls, courtyards, light, and furnishings. Mathias Goeritz contributed important artistic elements, while Chucho Reyes advised Barragán on religious art.
Yellow stained glass intensifies the orange walls, reflected light partially dematerializes the freestanding cross, and simple pine furniture reinforces the atmosphere of Franciscan austerity. The chapel shows how Barragán could create spiritual intensity without historical ornament or monumental size.
Torres de Satélite turned infrastructure into urban sculpture
Barragán and Mathias Goeritz designed five concrete prisms as a landmark at the motorway entrance to Ciudad Satélite. Their triangular sections make them appear sharp and narrow when approached head-on, then broad and flat as a car passes alongside them.
The towers were not designed as usable buildings. They created a modern civic image that could be experienced at speed, connecting architecture, sculpture, infrastructure, advertising, and urban development. Their eventual authorship dispute also reveals how difficult it was to separate individual contributions within Barragán's collaborations.
Casa Gilardi was organized around a tree that already existed on the site
When Barragán designed the house, he retained an existing jacaranda tree and made it the centre of the internal courtyard. A narrow yellow corridor leads toward an indoor pool and dining room, where blue, red, water, and overhead light form the focal composition.
Completed near the end of his career, Casa Gilardi condenses Barragán's main methods into one domestic sequence: preservation of nature, introverted planning, delayed revelation, changing daylight, intense colour, and water treated as part of the architecture.
