# Bougainvillea Red

Barragán's red is rarely a room's background — it is a single plane meant to stop the eye. In Casa Gilardi it appears as an isolated wall at the far end of the dining room, set against two blue planes and doubled by the pool's reflection. The isolation is deliberate: an inaccessible red surface reads closer to a painting than to a wall.

Under direct light the pigment sits close to vermilion; in shadow it drifts toward a darker carmine. Reflected in water, it loses saturation and mixes with whatever blue surrounds it, so the "same" red rarely measures the same twice across a single room.
