Presnya: The Narkomfin Experiment
Presnya’s modernist core is small enough to be built around a single strong idea: Moisei Ginzburg and Ignaty Milinis’s Narkomfin Building, still one of the most studied experiments in collective housing anywhere, with the Vesnin brothers’ Mostorg department store as a short walk’s counterpoint.

Built to house employees of the People's Commissariat of Finance, the Narkomfin Building is the clearest built argument for Constructivist collective living: private split-level units too compact for anything but sleeping and washing, connected by an internal corridor to a separate communal block with a kitchen, dining hall, gym and roof terrace.
A department store built by the Vesnin brothers in Presnya, its glazed corner and stacked horizontal volumes turning the practical requirements of retail — daylight, open floor plates, visibility from the street — into a clear Constructivist composition.
